Urumi: Review

There are several movies which really overwhelm you through out the entire length.I can assure you that Urumi is one of those movies where you just forget what's happening around and entrap yourself in a dream state.Much like inception.Urumi is a high voltage thrill ride for your eyes and ears.

Kelu Nayanar(Prithviraj)is a warrior whose childhood had been destroyed by the murder of his father(Arya). His best friend Vawwali(Prabhudeva) is always there for him B&W. The story begins, with intro of K.D and his friend(P&P) after a brief voice intro by KPSC lalitha.

The story continues as a flashback of KD's great forefather i.e (Kelu). The thrill begins from this juncture. For helping the Princess of Kolathiri kingdom kelu and Vawwali are introduced to the Kolathiri king himself, who asks him to trap THE man himself-Vasco da Gama. The events which follow this which involves the conspiracy to king the lord Of Arabian sea and the assassination attempts make the movie.During his journey to kill Gama,Kelu finds love from none othe than legendary Arackal Aisha who is responsible for deaths of 29 Portuguese soldiers, who tried to rob her honor. The whole race, adrenaline, thrill and love make Urumi a fantastic fictional and commercialized history of Kerala we have never ever heard of before.

The main highlight of this movie,is nothing but the magnificent camera work of Sangeeth Sivan. The man is an artist,he renders music with help of camera. The scenes, especially the water fall scenes are eye candy and exhilarating. The music is so fresh and creative. This must be Deepak Dev's most creative album.Tunes are wild and exotic and beautiful.

Prithviraj's fits into a T as Kelu Nayanar. There is no one in Malayalam cine field wo could be Kelu right now.He has to concentrate more on expressions,he always carries that don't care face with him, even in this movie.Genelia, always beautiful with expressive and lively eyes. But Jagathy Sreekumar, the famous comedian is the star of the movie. The man simply owned the whole cast.He sways and changes into and out of his male-female traits. The way he co-ordinated his bisexual characteristics was amazing. His "Shakuni" character stands tall above all.Nithya Menon and Amol Gupte had good roles and did well.Another impressive cast is Arya, who quite impresses in his extended cameo as Kelu's father. The actor ropes another fine role and walks away, head held high.

But a movie is not without negatives as well.Santhosh Sivan was so absorbed in carving out the natural beauty through his camera that he forgot ultra slo-mo and long sequences could harm the movie by slowing down the pace. The beginning scenes where somewhat boring and same applies to some post interval scenes. The action sequences would have been better at 1x than in those slo-mo's.Warriors were randomly throwing weapons all around without much co-ordination.One such bad move,an urumi could chop off its owner's head. The scriptwriter Shankar Ramakrishnan concentrated more on dialogues than script. This can make scenes odd.

But asides these negatives,it is quite an impressive movie.Urumi can be considered as a colorful graphic novel, with catchy dialogues than a developing story. The film drew comparisons from Braveheart and Gladiator, but i won't compare this film with those classics. The film that comes into my mind while seeing this movie was "300".These are quite similar. They have stunning visuals, superb screenplay and hunks:).The fight scenes are similar in using slow motion but the former excelled in it.Fight scenes sometimes felt too unbelievable.

Overall it is a good movie, which is fresh, new and exotic. We see the 400 year old kerala history, which was never pondered over by film makers. The film gives you a never before experience which you wouldn't forget for quite sometime. It is a new attempt and it deserves credit for excelling in it,atleast to some extent. This film deserves an applause. It is a magnificent lightning ride.

Must watch!
